About

About Michael Swinn

I have been a doctor for over 30 years, having qualified from University College London in 1991. Before qualifying I did an extra degree (BSc) in The History of Medicine at The Wellcome Institute in London. I also have a Masters degree in urology (MSc) and was awarded an additional higher degree (MD) for original research into young women with urinary retention at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London.

Before taking up my Consultant post I spent a year in Brisbane, Australia where I was clinical fellow at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and honorary lecturer at The University of Queensland. I was appointed Consultant Urological Surgeon at The Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust in 2004 where my practice encompasses a broad spectrum of general elective and emergency urology. I have held a variety of posts in the department including being head of department, a post I held for 6 years.

Following a preceptorship in robotic pelvic surgery at the world-renowned Keck Hospital in Los Angeles in 2013, I was appointed Consultant Surgeon at The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, Guildford where I spend half my working week. There I am a core member of the regional specialist bladder cancer team and carry out robotic cystectomies, ie “key-hole” operations to remove the bladder.

I have written numerous book chapters and papers in scientific and medical journals and have keen interests in teaching and the training of junior surgeons.

I am passionate about patient safety and am author of a book called "Hitting Your Head Against A Brick Wall" recounting my experience of raising concerns in the NHS and stating how I believe changes should be made to make healthcare a safer environment for patients.
